As a compliment to my teaching portfolio, this creative media portfolio showcases some of my multimedia production work as well as the creative media work of my past students.
After I published my second book in 2013, “Mapping Media to the Common Core,” I created the website ShowWithMedia.com to highlight 14 different media projects and products. Each includes a definition, examples, software / website options and tutorials. Projects include:
Digital Storytelling
I am a media creator and a digital storyteller. In the 19 years I’ve been a YouTube content creator, my videos have amassed over 50,000 watch hours. (As of January 2025) Some of my favorite (and relatively popular) videos include:
Sketchnotes and Narrated Sketchnotes
I love teaching others how to create sketchnotes or visual notes, often with an iPad and stylus. While I do not consider myself to be a highly skilled graphic artist, I am proud of many sketchnotes I have created. 66 of my sketchnotes are available in this Flickr album and 8 narrated sketchnotes are available in this YouTube playlist. Here is an example of a sketchnote and a narrated sketchnote version.

InfoPics
Helping students develop media literacy skills is a cornerstone of my teaching, and learning to thoughtfully craft InfoPics is a valuable class project and activity. Here are some favorite examples of InfoPics my middle school students created in the past during our “Froot Loop Conspiracy Theories” unit focusing on the Apollo Moon Landing Hoax, the SIFT web literacy framework, and Lateral Reading.

Scratch Coding Projects
Teaching my middle school computer programming students how to create basic animations as well as maze games in Scratch, a block-based coding language from MIT, are lessons I love to share. Here are a few exemplary student Scratch maze game projects, included in my “Student Scratch Maze Hall of Fame.”
Websites and Web Design
Since learning to create webpages and websites in the mid-1990s, I have created and continue to maintain a diverse web presence. Most of my websites are powered by either WordPress or Google Sites, although I have used a number of other client-side web design software programs as well as web-based design platforms. Some of my currently maintained websites and web project include:
WordPress Sites
- ShowWithMedia.com: a resource for multimedia content creators and communicators
- SpeedOfCreativity.org: my blog since 2005, I started blogging in 2003
- PlayingWithMedia.com: my library of video tutorials
- Learning Signs: our family learning blog
Google Sites
- Lessons by Wes Fryer: my STEM and media literacy lesson sharing site
- Media Literacy by Wes: my curated resources and links about media literacy
- Storychasers: my digital storytelling passion project (formerly a 501.C3)
- PodCampCLT: a meetup collaborative for podcasters in Charlotte, NC
Other Social Media Channels
I am an active content creator on numerous other websites and platforms. These are comprehensively linked on my “AFTER page.” One of the fun examples includes my social media channels for #CookWithWes, which is where I share my culinary creations, especially backyard barbecue! These channels include TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as my recipe blog running WordPress. All my cooking videos are shared via this playlist on my primary YouTube channel.
